Charming the Troublemaker Mitchell Crossroads Book 2 edition by Pepper Basham Religion Spirituality eBooks

I have fallen in love with new author, Pepper Basham, and her stories! She knows how to weave the rights notes of faith, family, humor, romance, history, and Appalachian culture, plus intriguing suspense, into a symphony of poignant and delightful reading that brings you to a crescendo of satisfaction, and a hope that this is not the finale of the series. Charming the Troublemaker is a stand-alone, but better enjoyed by reading book one, A Twist of Faith, where you get your feet wet in the Mitchell’s Crossroads community and are ready to dive right into this delightful second offering.

Some of my favorite things about this story? An intelligent, capable, yet wounded heroine, (Rainey). She has a passion for helping others, loving her family, and can wield a cast iron skillet that will have you ducking and running for your life. Alex Murdock, a handsome flirt, charmer, and a bit mysterious…Yes, please! Ma Mitchell, who is full of wisdom and everyone’s beloved grandma. Sweet Sarah, who I want to adopt, princess ponies and all. Haus the grinning dog because every scene is better with Haus in it. Reticent Trigg, who is hardworking and dependable, steady as a rock. Bubbly Emma, who is human sunshine, all the time. Hmmm… I just about like everything about the book; even the bad guys are well written!

For those of you who like “kissing books,” here is a favorite quote from Alex Murdock that had me smiling: “It was her fault, really. A woman didn’t spring a kiss-attack on a man without consequences. And boy, oh boy, he liked the possibility of those consequences.”

I enjoyed this seriously fun romance and I hope you will too!

Charming the Troublemaker Mitchell Crossroads Book 2 edition by Pepper Basham Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Rainy Mitchell was devastated when she found out her husband had been cheating on her. He’d already destroyed her self-confidence with his criticisms. So when Dr. Alex Murdock comes to work beside her, she’s not at all thrilled with the notorious flirt. Another untrustworthy pretty-boy is the last thing she needs.

Alex can’t believe he ended up in this Podunk, mountain town. He’s a city boy who doesn’t know a thing about country living and doesn’t care to know. However, the beautiful mountains begin to soothe him, his landlord’s family welcomes him, and one pretty colleague might just change his mind if she would quit judging him as inadequate the way everyone else has done all his life. If that isn’t enough to try to handle, teaching isn’t his forte, and protecting his sister and niece keeps getting messier and messier.

There were a few minor errors, but overall, this was a wonderful book that I could hardly put down. I read the first in the series and loved it, but this one might be even better. I hope the series will continue, featuring Trigg, Emma, and Evie.
Rainey Mitchell swore off men after a painful divorce, and that goes double for handsome, charming, and flirty men like Dr. Alex Murdock. Only one problem Dr. Murdock is not only a colleague, but an expert grant writer. Rainey needs his help if she's going to keep the Tolliver Learning Center, a school aimed at helping impoverished and learning disabled students, from losing its funding. She steels herself to avoid his charm, but Alex seems to break down her defenses at every turn, not that he knows that. This debonair troublemaker of a guy has a boatload of baggage and secrets to deal with, and if he doesn't, his romance with Rainey could be over before it starts.

Back when Pepper Basham released A Twist of Faith, I wrote in a review that I wanted a story about Rainey and her daughter Sarah. Charming the Troublemaker more than delivers, with a cast of warm and unforgettable characters. Rainey tops the list, as a perfect mix of strong heroine and vulnerable single mom who successfully juggles motherhood, teaching, and coordinating an entire learning center. She admits her flaws and even defends them in many cases, but has a refreshingly teachable spirit and spunky sense of humor that make her worth rooting for.

The same could be said for Alex. At the outset, he comes across as arrogant and annoying. He has his reasons for that, but Pepper doesn't fall back on the cliché of making those reasons his excuse. Instead, she lets Alex balance his friendly and charming side with a slightly prickly tendency to push people away. Alex softens, but gradually and realistically (mostly thanks to Sarah at first; I love that little sugarplum to pieces). The other thing I loved about Alex is that he blossoms into a true hero for Rainey, Sarah, and other people in his life. He's not at all macho; you could even call him a little dorky. But when the going gets tough, he's right there, putting himself between loved ones and danger with no thought for his own safety, physical or emotional. Bravo, Alex, and bravo Pepper, for letting him grow so well into that role.

The suspense in Charming the Troublemaker is certainly unexpected, because most of the book is a sweet Southern romance. There were times I wanted to see a little more suspense and slightly higher stakes. With that said, Pepper does a great job with the existing suspenseful elements. She did her research on Witness Protection, and it shows without making the book dry. One particular climactic scene stands out as tense and well-written.

As always, Pepper's secondary characters grab and keep your attention, too. I'm looking forward to Emma's story next, and more adventures from this family. Plus, I'm looking forward to more warmth and wisdom from the incomparable "Mama" Grace Mitchell. In a lot of ways, she reminds me of my Mamaw, may she rest in peace.

There are some minor issues. Pepper hops back and forth between using the last names Ross and Randall (which for some reason seem to be a lot of people's last names. It's fairly confusing). I also got tired of seeing Rainey described as a blonde. Did Alex notice much of anything other than her hair? Well anyway, as I said, when you compare that with all the good stuff, it's hardly worth mentioning. Read and enjoy!
Where, oh where to begin? Pepper Basham’s books have become a go-to for me. Her pages are filled with laughter, sizzling chemistry, elements of faith, believable relationships, and settings that make you want to pack up and move. If you haven’t read A Twist of Faith, the first in this series, then it’s a must! This second book, Charming the Troublemaker continues on with secondary characters from the first novel and was so easy to fall in love with. Fans of contemporary Christian Romance will adore this charming story.
