Fought in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee, Daniel Ellis' Civil War was no less bloody than that of soldiers in the east. As a "pilot" in the American Civil War, he guided Union soldiers, runaway slaves, deserting Confederates, and others from the mountains to the Union lines.

Already a veteran of the Mexican-American War, with compromised health due to bouts with malaria caught in Mexico, Ellis nevertheless served throughout the war at great peril to his life.

After the war, continued Confederate sympathies in Tennessee and the publication of this book continued to make life tenuous for Dan Ellis, as he was threatened many times.

He lived into a ripe old age (80). James R. Gilmore found Ellis living in poverty and worked to get him more government compensation for his services in the Civil War. Charles Frazier used this book as a source when writing "Cold Mountain."

For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones.

The Thrilling True Adventures of Daniel Ellis 1861~1865 eBook Daniel Ellis

I came across the story of Daniel Ellis while trying to uncover the history of some of my own ancestors, who lived in Johnson County during the Civil War. Much of Ellis' book covers his continuous travels back and forth between Carter County and the Union lines in Kentucky, and even though (it seems) he covers every single trip he took back and forth between these locations, his storytelling style, plus the fact that each trip was so packed with adventure and unique challenges, made this book hard to put down until I had finished it. Ellis' writing really illustrates well the notion of "neighbor against neighbor" that existed during this time period.

The Thrilling True Adventures of Daniel Ellis 1861~1865 eBook Daniel Ellis Reviews

Loved this book.
Had stories of my ancestorys East Tennessee
This book is a must read for those seeking first hand accounts of the Civil War. I live in this area of East Tennessee and the accuracy and first hand accounts as seen through a Union Scout are very accurate.
Very interesting book. I wonder if he had a ghost writer. This book is so full of colorful, prose-y writing that you wonder if Daniel Ellis was such a prolific talker, how could he keep quiet long enough to smuggle men back and forth through enemy territory? I enjoyed what I read of it, as it was fascinating to know what when on in the area in which my ancestors lived. Unimaginable.
Being an East Tennessean and growing up hearing the tales of the Daniel Ellis adventures it was great to finally read his book. I was inspired to visit his grave, his old cabin home which still stands, and many of the areas he talks about. I found his memory to be a bit off in a few instances, but overall a great read from the man who walked the path. By this I mean, tracing some of the names in the census that he mentions proved to be futile, which in reality, he likely changed to protect those involved. Still a fun read to view the war through the eyes and life of an East Tennessee Unionist.
