I really did enjoy this story. Ms. Hardin has a writing style that really fleshes out her characters and is a master at filling in the scenes. This is one of those stories that plays out in your head like a movie.
This is a story about a woman that has seen some strange things happening and is shocked to find out that she can do some strange things also. The vampires are buying children with magical gifts to use as blood slaves in order to strengthen themselves with their blood. Devan finds out her father and boyfriend are in the business of brokering these sales. They find the children and sell them to the highest bidder. Disgusted that she actually assisted in cruising orphanages with Robin, her college boyfriend, Devan goes out to find help to stop her father. She comes to finds out he's a little fish in a huge pond. She meets Kent, Langston and their group who all have strange powers, only to finds out she is the strongest of them all.
I made the mistake of reading the series following this series (For the Love of Fae) first and fell in love with the characters. Even though I had a hard time understanding them at first. Now I see why, I needed to read this story to understand what was happening.

Witch Way Bends Book 1 in the BendBiteShift Trilogy Olivia Hardin 9781467986427 Books Reviews

Witch Way Bends is such an appropriate name for this story (you will have to read to find out why). Devan thinks she is just a normal woman with a very bad family. Her family seems to be into trafficking children for purposes that no one would approve, but she doesn't know the truth. What she knows is only half the truth. Yes they are trafficking children and yes you would not approve of the reasons, but the reason is supernatural instead of just sick. What Devan also doesn't know is that she has been used by the people that are fighting to take down her father's organization. They are witches/warlocks generally speaking and magicked answers out of her and made her forget her involvement. The problem is that she actually believes in their cause and really wants to put an end to her father's business s well as get even for the things she was forced to do.

Kent, the man in charge of the mission, doesn't even realize what he has gotten himself into by allowing Devan to just tag along. He feels this deep seated need to protect Devan all the time and to keep her hidden away, but she will not have it. Without knowing a lick of magic, she is able to convince Kent to not only take her along but let her in on the whole thing. At least she doesn't know that she actually used magic to do that. Kent didn't either because they cannot tell that the other is magical. Something keeps blocking them from that information. Only the shaman, Langston, can tell that Devan is truly a witch. It takes a lot of time to prove to her that she has powers and that indeed the supernatural world exists, but once the door is open, LOOK OUT! Devan will shock you with her capabilities and Kent will amaze you with his devotion.

Did I also mentioned that their are fairies and vampires involved in all this? Vampires are out to find and drain Devan. The fairies are trying to protect her. Why is there so much interest in a witch that seems to know nothing about her heritage? Will they bring down the organization? Will the children being sold ever find real homes? You will have to read to find out, but I will tell you that you probably will want to have book 2, Bitten Shame, ready when you finish. The story ends well, but leaves you wanting more answers.

"Witch Way Bends" made an okay free read. It did have an original and rather interesting plot. The writing style was decent. However, the character development was lacking so I really didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. The pacing of the story was pretty good and there was action. There were also a pleasing variety of supernatural creatures. I really didn't fill the chemistry between Devan and Kent and at times Devan kind of got on my nerves. There are a couple of intimate scenes but they were so nondescript that the story actually would have been fine without them. Everyone just isn't cut out to write love scenes. I considered reading the next book in the series but at 3.99 for 128 pages I think I'll pass. Besides, I simply wasn't impressed enough by this book to sent 3.99 on the next one. Moreover, the plot in the next "Novella" appears to focus primarily on Jill Devan friend turned vampire and I'm not that interested in her story. I did like Devan's friend Rooney. His antics and comments added a bit of humor to the story. I think that "Boomchikawowow" will stay with me for a while! LOL There were quite a few editing errors but for the most part I managed not to be too distracted by them. The story didn't end on a cliffhanger per se, in that the main villain in this story was dealt with, but questions regarding Devan's ancestry did remain unanswered.

However, when all was said and done the story just didn't leave me completely satisfied. It's difficult to explain what I mean. When I finished reading the book I was simply done I didn't feel anything, e.g. no elation at the outcome, no stupid grin on my face, no excitement,no slight warming of the heart, no feelings of sadness b/c the story ended, or excitement to post the review so I could read the next book. None of the emotions that typically linger when I reached the end of a story that has truly captivated, enthralled or thrilled me.
